Microsclerotherapy is a popular and effective treatment for Spider Veins on the legs by injection and many patients who chose to undergo this treatment find some success with the treatment. Although Spider Veins are without symptoms, they can have an unattractive appearance and can cause self-consciousness, particularly at holiday time! They may be associated with varicose veins but can occur even when there are no varicose veins present.

A drug called a sclerosant is injected directly into the problem veins causing the lining of the veins to swell so that no blood can flow through them, it’s the blood in the veins that is visible in the skin rather than the veins themselves. More than one treatment is often required, as the body will sometimes repair rather than ‘get rid of’ the damaged vein. Save Face, an organisation that helps members of the public to locate safe, fully trained, licensed and insured practitioners for non-surgical procedures state that it is reasonable to expect a 40-80% improvement in the appearance of spider veins following a Microsclerotherapy treatment, though in many cases, multiple treatments are required. www.saveface.co.uk/treatments/body-treatments/vein-treatments

Following treatment it is necessary to wear a support stocking as this helps the veins to seal off and prevents blood flowing back into them.

Occasionally, a small area of brownish pigmentation can occur at the injection site. Very rarely a small area of skin may react to the injection causing a little ulcer. This is rare, and will heal over time if it does occur.

You should expect to return to your normal activities immediately after treatment. There may be some mild discomfort in the legs and some itching and it is important to wear the stockings as advised. You will be given a post-treatment information leaflet and we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, hot baths, saunas, extremes of temperature and prolonged sun exposure for a couple of weeks after treatment.

It may take between 8 to 12 weeks to see improvement following your treatment and between 2 to 4 sessions are recommended to give optimum results.

Microsclerotherapy after care advice

You may resume normal activities immediately. The aim of treatment is to encourage the veins to close. The following advice is intended to help ensure the best results from the treatment, and to minimise the occurrence of side effects.

  • Take a 10 minute walk immediately following treatment.
  • Wear the support hosiery day and night for 3 days (72 hours). After 72 hours you may take the hosiery off for a short time to have a cool shower or bath. Wearing the support hosiery constantly is crucial – it may be a nuisance but it makes all the difference!
  • Do not be alarmed if the treated areas look worse when you remove the hosiery – this is completely normal at this stage.
  • Preferably shower rather than bathe after the procedure. Avoid rubbing shower gel or soap over the injection sites, but simply splash these areas with water and pat dry.
  • Avoid the use of body lotions or creams in the treated areas for the first few days.
  • Wear the hosiery during the day for a further 5 – 7 days, removing it overnight.
  • Avoid extremes of temperature for 14 days i.e. very hot baths, saunas, sun beds, ice-packs.
  • Avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks – pigmentation may be enhanced and take longer to fade.
  • Avoid high impact exercise for at least 2 weeks.
  • Avoid waxing or shaving of the legs for 4 weeks.
  • Elevate your legs as much as possible for the first two weeks.
  • Do not take long-haul flights within 4 weeks of treatment.
  • Consider wearing long term compression hosiery to reduce the appearance of thread veins.
